It's 9 am and I'm exhausted

Why is it that no matter how much sleep I get, I am always tired? Maybe that's a question I'll never have the answer to. Other questions with no answers include, why the world seems to be always going downhill. The current political climate basically makes me want to crawl under the covers and never come out. I hate that people are so divided by how they think the government should interact with the people. And that it's all tied back to whether you're a "good person" or not. That's bullshit. Not that there aren't good and bad people out there; of course there are, but they aren't mutually exclusive to a political affiliation.

When I'm asked my political affiliation, I say I'm a moderate. My boyfriend disagrees, says I'm a conservative, but blame it on my days as a radical leftist, I'm just not ready to accept the republican label yet. Most of my friends are conservative or conservative leaning moderates. But that's not to say that I can't be friends with a democrat or that I immediately write someone off as soon as they claim that universal healthcare is the only way for America to redeem itself. I simply mean that I have yet to find a liberal who doesn't hold the belief that any republican, conservative, or hell, anyone who doesn't hate Donald Trump with a burning passion, is racist, homophobic, and the scum of the earth. Now some people will tell you that Trump in to blame for the divide in America right now. I don't think that's true. Sure, I don't agree with every word that comes out of his mouth, but generally speaking, our president is doing good things for this country. Of course there are extremists that will take what he says and interpret it as "we have to rid America of the lowest denominator aka anyone who isn't white", but that doesn't mean Trump believes that. Look at it this way, there are extremists who took what Obama said when he was president and interpreted as "all white people are evil and are the sole reason for any problems a black person has." Of course we know Obama didn't say that, but that doesn't stop crazy people to hearing what they want to hear to justify their fucked up beliefs.

The way that social justice has permeated politics is the sole reason we are feeling this great sense of divide. Whether you choose to acknowledge it, the fact is America is the best place for people to thrive, regardless of gender, skin color, or sexual orientation. I'm a woman and yet I'm receiving a top education and had an amazing job. I now collect unemployment as most of us do amidst this pandemic. Now some will attribute that to my white skin. However, my friends who are female and not white are attending the same school I am and are actually volunteering with a republican congressional candidate right now. If America is racist, tell me how that is possible. The administration  of my college are all of varying races and genders. If it is so difficult for a person of color to get a job in America and Be Successful, then how is it that I come in contact with at least one person, if not multiple people, of color at my school every day. I just will never fall for the lie that a person is stunted by something as insignificant as their skin color or gender.

A serious problem that I do see every day however, is people being stunted by their political affiliation. I was driven out of my college's pre law society due to my political affiliations. Because I was moderate and supported the president, I had to be racist, homophobic, and therefore unfit to lead the society. My tweets were screenshotted and posted to shame me for my beliefs and it was even added that my profile is public so if anyone had anything to say they should go to my profile and say it. This person essentially crucified me for my beliefs and then sent others who agreed with him to attack me. That shouldn't happen. The hate I received is unlike any I had ever endured. In elementary and high school, I was bullied and excluded. I thought that when I left my hometown, that would end. Unfortunately I was wrong, the reason for the bullying changed, but the bullying didn't. The friends I have know me and know that I am not racist and I am not a hateful person, but people who disagree with my politics will not have you believe that.

Now I say all this not to  garner sympathy. Truthfully most of this was just a rant because I needed to get this off my chest and I may not even post this. I do however, think it's important to recognize the divide that exists and that is growing in our society. People should not be judged on their political affiliation anymore than they should be judged on their gender, sexual orientation, or race. People should be judged on their character which takes time to see and can't be judged by looking at their social media profiles or at who they vote for.

If you made it this far, thank you. I am impressed that you cared this much about what I had to say. If you are also disappointed in the way conservatives are treated then I may have an outlet for you. I'm starting a Turning Point USA chapter at St Francis College. TPUSA is a nonprofit organization for people who want a smaller government and want to keep their freedom. Nowadays that is becoming a controversial opinion. You don't have to be conservative to join, you just have to accept that some people have different beliefs on how to solve the problems America faces and those different beliefs don't represent their character. Message me on instagram @alexiscxcilia if you're interested. And if you don't go to St Francis go to tpusa.com and you can see if your college has a chapter or you can start your own like I am. If you aren't in college, then there's still plenty of TPUSA content you can enjoy and I believe there's even opportunities for activism for high school students, but I don't know for sure. All the information is on their website so check it out. And thanks again for reading :)

Slowing down

I just googled something and I noticed at the top of the page before the results are even displayed, Google puts the approximate number of results (usually in the millions) and the time it took to get those results (usually a number of seconds).  That's insane. Not the number or the time span (which is pretty impressive) but that Google puts that first on the page. A subtle brag or a representation of how our society only values results. I recently read an essay about slowing down and enjoying nature called "The Invitation" by Barry Lopez. It inspired me to take a step back and recognize that being productive every single day is not the goal of life, or at least it shouldn't be.  Every night I go to bed thinking about all the things that I didn't get done that day and never the things that I did. I don't want to brag, but I can be a pretty responsible, productive member of society when I want to be. Except that I have never felt like I was in my life. Every we...

Thoughts lately

I've been thinking a lot lately about the future and making plans.  Not just because my boyfriend of two years who I really believed I was going to marry, broke up with me, but because this is my last semester of college. This time next year I will be working a job that I either love or hate, living somewhere that I can afford or barely can afford, and I don't know who my friends will be.  As much as I try to imagine living in New York I just can't see how I could afford to live here. An entry-level job is going to barely cover a shared apartment, groceries, and my monthly student loan payment. I love New York and I love the friends I have here and I wish I could just stay and see what they accomplish. It's just not realistic for me to think that I could live comfortably here. So I'm going to end up somewhere else probably. I'm going to apply to jobs here, but I'll be applying in other places as well.  Breaking up with my boyfriend made me realize how much I...

Lamenting the struggles of long distance

Hello! Welcome back to the blog! I have been inspired to pick this back up again by my sister, www.sophoolery.wix.com, and Indy Blue, whoisindyblue.com. If you don't know who either of those people are, look them up. You won't be disappointed.  So what wisdom am I going to dispense on here today? I started my senior year and things are going okay. I have an internship that pays very little so if you want to donate to the Lex Foundation for (my own) Better Living, let me know. One of my professors has this brilliant lesson plan where we write reflections on five or six essays every week and then choose one topic to do a "deep dive" essay on. It is so much. Plus obviously writing for my internship and thesis meetings. You can't blame me for having this on the back burner for a while!  Okay, maybe you can since technically it's been there since March. Whatever, I'm back now.  The lesson that I have been learning this past couple of months since school started...
